HOW DO WE MAKE A CUSTOM SUIT?

The making of custom clothing requires a special process. Please read through the below steps to familiarize yourself with how we go about it.

Our Service Menu

At Watson Ellis all of our options are extremely hands on. We are not a tech company looking to sell you on virtual fitting. Some of the most important measurements are taken while talking to the client and touching the body. We also believe in having clients FEEL the different kinds of cloth. Quality cannot be understood just by looking at an image. Our approach is truly creative tailoring, we do not have many limitations on what we can do.

But First…

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY β€œHANDMADE CUSTOM”?

Call it our gold standard at WATSON ELLIS. Everyone gets this base level of excellence when working with us. The service levels only differ with exactly that, our service. Ie., more of our time equals a different service level. Let us explain more below…

HOW MUCH DOES A CUSTOM MADE SUIT COST? LEARN ABOUT OUR SERVICE LEVELS BELOW

LEVEL 1:

Handmade Custom $

Starting Prices Level 1*

  • 2pc Handmade Suit $2000.00

  • 3pc Handmade Suit $2700.00

  • Jacket or Blazer $1850.00

  • Pants $750.00

For amazing suits using our proprietary suit sizes as well as your measurements to craft your ideal suit fit. With hundreds of design combinations you are able to have something truly unique. If options scare you, just choose from one of the many looks hanging in our design studio!

LEVEL 2:

Handmade Bespoke $$

Starting Prices Level 2*

  • 2pc Bespoke Suit $2,550.00

  • 3pc Bespoke Suit $3250.00

  • Bespoke Jacket or Blazer $2300.00

  • Bespoke Pants $1100.00

We add the making of a muslin (test garment) for people who are very asymmetrical due to scoliosis and/or have other fit challenges. Muslins allow the final garment to be fit to near perfection before touching the final fabric. Of course anyone could choose this option if they wanted to ensure a perfect fit. It’s especially advisable for a first suit.

LEVEL 3:

Original Design Bespoke $$$

Starting Prices Bespoke & Original Design*

  • 2pc Bespoke Original Suit $5000.00

  • 3pc Bespoke Original Suit $6500.00

  • Jacket or Blazer $3300.00

  • Pants $2100.00

For an original work with a higher cost that covers the time to come up with the design, source the fabric, make the muslin, and the finished garment based on complexity. This level includes the bespoke process of a muslin (test garment) explained in β€œLevel 2” and sometimes multiple muslin’s. This process can take up to a year to complete and will require multiple visits to the studio. This is what true couture and bespoke is.

*Please note these are starting prices, so they are examples of our least expensive 100% wool suiting from Italy and what it would cost in each service level. Prices are subject to change seasonally.

LEVEL 1: Handmade Custom

  • First we will discuss your fit needs, style preferences, and how you want to present. As well as have a quick browse through swatches so we can get an idea of what kind of fabric/suit you are looking for. (This is important to the fitting!)

We will then proceed with your fitting, taking some basic measurements and fitting you in our Watson Ellis size samples.

Once we have what we need from your fitting we will sit down to choose your fabric and discuss all the other design detailsβ€”linings, buttons, buttonhole colors, lapel widths. It’s all pretty fun. This one-on-one session will take approximately 1.5 hours.

  • 4-6 weeks later we will meet again for a second fitting in your newly made custom clothes. In this session we will make sure the garment/s fit exactly as we had planned. If you’re over the moon with the product you can take it home then and there. If we think some minor alterations still need to be made, no problemβ€”it will only take about a week from the date of your second fitting to make these changes.

  • If alterations have been made then we’ll meet one last time to have a final look at your garment/s before you take it all home!

LEVEL 2: Handmade Bespoke

  • 4-6 weeks later we will meet again for a second fitting of your muslin. In this session we will assess our original measurements and adjustments and see what else we want to do to get an even better fit for the final garment.

Sometimes we get a special unicorn where we love the muslin fit and we are ready to proceed to the final garment, and sometimes people may need a second muslin, third round of fitting before proceeding to the final garment. All of this is β€˜normal’ in the scope of custom and bespoke clothing.

Even though we are experts in fitting bodies, every body is completely unique, and the different in an infinite number of ways. Bare with us, let us do our jobs, and we will get you to gold in the end.

  • Your garment is finally here! We require you to come back at least one more time for this third (sometimes 4th) fitting, to make sure there aren’t any final adjustments we wants to make.

If there are, they will be done right there in the NYC studio. It will take just about 7-10 days to complete.

  • If alterations have been made then we’ll meet one last time to have a final look at your garment/s before you take it all home!

LEVEL 3: Original Design Bespoke

  • In this 30 minute consultation we will hash out your conceptual ideas for your original design, maybe look at some imagery and sketches as well as look at swatches to narrow down the direction for your fabric. We may even decide on the fabric or fabric’s!

  • This is where we really get started. First we will discuss your fit needs, and how you want to present.

We will then proceed with your fitting, taking some measurements and fitting you in our Watson Ellis size samples.

After the session, we send you a rough sketch of your design to confirm all the details we discussed.

Some FAQs

Need To Know for Custom Suits

  • We start by taking your body measurements by hand with a measuring tape. We have a private fitting room where we will then ask you to try on some of our garments, based on your shoulder width and/or chest circumference and your hip/seat circumference. At this point we'll talk through how you want to present and the things we can do to achieve this! We will make recommendations based on your goals.

  • During the fitting, we'll ask you questions about how you'd like to present, what makes you feel comfortable and confident, (as well as the inverse). It's very collaborative! We fit the body in front of us so that your suit appears made for you, and then use fashion elements to make it fit your vision. This is true for all of our clients!

  • Great question! If your suit is for everyday or work wear, please wear similar undergarments (or whatever feels right for you) to what you would wear with your suit in the future. Things like binders and shapewear of course change the shape of your body, and we need to account for this at the time of the fitting. If you can, also bring proper shoes and a shirt.

  • We take lots of care to fit your garment as close to your wearing or need date as possible. If you are planning on or undergoing a major physical change, we highly suggest going with the bespoke process, which includes the muslin fitting (test garment) before the real suit gets made. This is helpful for many reasons, including your own peace of mind and comfort! The muslin is a useful tool in cases of weight loss, surgeries and transitions, or even pregnancy.

  • If you can think of it, we can make it. If you have specific ideas please come with photos! If not, we will talk you through our many choices. We'll ask you what your design goals are (androgynous, femme, masculine, etc.) and work with you to achieve them.

  • Alterations are included when your suit first comes in up until the final fitting. We do not offer lifetime adjustments. Any alterations for future weight fluctuation can be done for you at current market rates. That being said, we will fit the suit to the body you have right now to perfection. And before making a second or third suit, we will of course check the fit of your previous WE suits and make any necessary updates to your pattern.

  • Our attention to detail and our expertise when it comes to fitting custom clothing to all bodies, coupled with our unlimited design options and our range of the world's best fabrics. All of these things should come with the territory of running a business like ours, but the truth is that they don't; there's often more salesmanship than actual craft going on out there. Not the case with us. At Watson Ellis, we listen to your style-voice and will not let you walk out the door until you're completely satisfied with your one-of-a-kind custom suit, tuxedo or other garment.

  • Absolutely! We love traditional styles in men's suiting as well and make them all the time for many of our clients. From classic pinstripe suits, to houndstooth blazers, black tuxedos, to understated sports coats and suits for the office -- we have a wide array of more traditional and conservative options to choose from.

  • Believe it or not this question comes up a lot, and yes, we absolutely do make these items. Recently we've made a couple out of this beautiful dark moleskin fabric we have on offer, and they worked out beautifully. We'd love to keep exploring these styles with you, so please don't hesitate to make an obligation-free appointment to come in for a design session and discuss further.

  • We don't do made-to-measure suits, which are generally only moderately customizable items. Instead we offer both what we call 'handmade custom' suits and bespoke suiting options. Both options are crafted by hand and completely customizable in terms of design options and fabric choices. We would advise you to please read this page (above) for further guidance on our processes.

  • Watson Ellis strives to be a friendly, comfortable environment for all people. We mean it when we say that all are welcome, and that at our company we strive to make suits are for all people. We have worked with the full range of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum in making custom suits, and we look forward to meeting you, too! We will work hard to make your fitting both enjoyable and affirming.

  • Sorry, we do not alter existing suits made by other companies. However, if there's an old suit of yours that you absolutely adore and want to replicate, we'd be more than happy to work with you on recreating it in the form of a new suit.

  • Absolutely we can. We welcome everyone with open arms, and most importantly, we are experts at working with people of all shapes and sizes. We will not try to squeeze you into some uncomfortable template. We will listen to your body and shape unique pieces to it, because that's what everyone deserves when they come in for a custom garment, whether it’s a custom power suit, a white wedding tuxedo, a double breasted blazer, a tailored overcoat, or just a pair of wide leg trousers. In most cases when someone is a really unique fit, we will require a bespoke fitting process.

  • No problem! As long as your specialty project is broadly in the same ballpark / family as the tailored suit, then we can definitely work with you. We have created lots of specialized garments in the past. Everything is made by hand, we don't use cookie-cutter processes. Sky is really the limit in terms of design.

  • We ask to see you twice before you take home your new custom suit or tuxedo, at minimum. We are very committed to the final look of your garment, and hope that you can commit to this process as well. If you pursue the bespoke option (with a muslin or test garment), we would be talking about at least three visits.

  • We give you a 24 hour grace period to make any adjustments to your order, however after we submit design and fit to the factory, changes cannot be made to design as your pattern is crafted on the specifics of what you chose at your appointment.

  • We take payment in full at the first fitting. The fabric is purchased as soon as your order goes in. Our work starts at the very first appointment.

  • Because we offer a wealth of tailoring and design experience. Melissa, our founder and head designer, has fit and design in her blood. Since she was a teenager she has had her own prominent line of sewing patterns. She knows how to fit and design to unique bodies better than anyone.

  • Because we don’t take half measures at Watson Ellis. We stand by the quality of every garment that leaves our studio. To us, designing and manufacturing custom clothing is not just our business, it’s our passion. We are perfectionists. Our β€˜true custom’ approach means we offer endless design and fit options. We are not limited to suiting templates, as most other companies in the industry are.
